Alternative Treatments

I am breastfeeding and I don't want to quit even though my prolactinoma is growing quite a bit from nursing. My endocrinologist and other doc's have told me I should start taking cabergoline or bromocriptine, but doing so would require me to quit nursing. Has anyone tried herbal supplements or essential oils that have worked?

  1. Although I am not pregnant and do not have children, my endo at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto California has said many times that when I do become pregnant it is possible to continue taking either cabergoline or bromocriptine...even when breastfeeding. He says that although cabergoline is not FDA approved for use under those conditions it is possible and he's had patients who have done it and suffered no ill effects for their infants. It would be my choice at that time. It's not FDA declined, it's just not been FDA approved.

As far as herbal supplements, I did have a naturopath successfully stop my lactation a few years ago for a few months. But then he moved up north. If you want either one of these docs names, e-mail me for more info.

  2. I read recently that zinc and B6 showed to reduce elevated prolactin levels.
